Overview: You will research an artist or a style of drawing or painting. You will then  state some facts and then write and/or do some drawing.

The exam period is about 1 1/2 hours long. The first approximate 45 minutes are spent in the library, the last 45 minutes in the art room.

1. In the library you will research a style of art or a particular artist. Suggestions are below.

2. You will write and/or type 20 facts about the artistic style or particular artist you have chosen to research. Put it all  into a paragraph for a guaranteed 20% or just do it as a list of sentences for a little less than 20%. This will be done in the library and/or the art room.

3. After the 45 minute session in the library the class will move to the art room where you will draw something related to or in the style of the person or style of what you chose to study.

OR

4. You can write a hypothetical letter to the artist or someone you know describing and explaining why you like the particular style or artist you chose to study.

20% of the grade is just following directions: Working quietly and attempting the assignment to the best of your ability. This should be easy, If you’re in a chair, a pencil is in your hand, you look busy, and you’re not talking you get 20%.  If I have to redirect you lose points.

20% of the grade is the stating of 20 facts.  What could be easier? If you state 20 facts, you get 20%.  If you state 19 facts, you get 19%

60% of the grade is the actual way of stating the 20 facts and the drawing or letter.  This might sound more vague, but if you write full sentences and make a reasonable attempt at the drawing or the letter, you can easily get this.

Some suggested styles, followed by some suggested artists to research:

All of the artists and styles can be cut and pasted into Wikipedia, google, and google  images for information.

Impressionisim: Pissaro, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Cassat, Morisot, Sisley, etc.

Expressionisim: Modigliani, Edvard Munch, Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Klee, etc.

Fauvism: Matisse, Gauguin, Rouault, Dufy, etc.

Surrealisim or Dadaisim: Dali, Max Ernst, Morandi, Miro, Duchamp, Breton, etc.

Abstract expressionism:  Franz Kline, De Kooning, Tobey, David Smith, Rothko, etc.

Comics: Jack Kirby, Jim Steranko, Corben, Frank Miller, there are so many comic book artists it’s hard to pick. Darrius just came in and was interested in the Ninja Turtles which was drawn by Eastman and Laird, so he could look those guys up and state 20 facts about the both of them.  There are lots of options if you want to do a comics artist.

Book illustration: Authur Rackam, Maurice Sendak, Dr. Suess, Pilkey, Howard Pyle, Beatrix Potter, etc.

You can pick another artist or style on your own, the above ones are my suggestions.

If you really can’t think of a style or an artist you want to emulate but you have a good idea for something you’d like to draw, see me.  You’ll still have to do the questions but we can talk and discuss, but you had better have an idea ready to tell me.  There is not much time for this project/drawing.
